Tammy Cravey, a dedicated fire inspector with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department, has always been driven by a deep passion for helping others. “Serving others just gives me joy… and I get to do that daily,” she shares. Early in her career, Tammy focused on rescuing people during fires, but as a fire inspector, she now takes a more proactive role in preventing them. Through fire safety inspections, code compliance checks, and hazard investigations, Tammy safeguards her community by preventing fires before they start. This shift has not only allowed her to protect lives but also to grow both personally and professionally, continuing to serve while expanding her expertise in fire safety.

Throughout her career, Tammy has been inspired by strong female role models, especially her Aunt Gail, whose compassion and commitment to helping others have profoundly influenced Tammy’s own approach to service. As a woman in a male-dominated field, Tammy has faced her share of challenges, but those obstacles have only strengthened her resolve to succeed. Reflecting on her proudest career moment, Tammy points to her graduation from fire academy. “That test was very hard,” she recalls, describing the academy as one of the biggest physical and mental challenges she has ever faced. Overcoming those challenges to become a fire inspector is a major accomplishment she’s immensely proud of.

Tammy’s advice to her younger self—and to other women—centers on trusting your instincts and pursuing your dreams. Starting her fire service career at 38, she encourages others not to let age or gender hold them back. Her story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to follow your passion and make a meaningful impact in your community, proving that with perseverance and determination, anyone can succeed in a field where their contributions are truly transformative.
