Pickleball is not only driving more players to the game, but now driving more people to Macon-Bibb County. For the first time ever, Tattnall Square Park is hosting the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) Pickleball State Tournament from September 10-12.
The honor of hosting this state tournament did not come about because of luck: The county went through a competitive bidding process with other cities in the state. It also helped that in 2020, our Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars funded the construction of seven more pickleball courts to Tattnall Square Park.
“I don’t think you’ll find anyone that would tell you this isn’t the best facility in the state,” said SPLOST Coordinator Clay Murphy. “Being centrally located, having nearby hotels, being close to downtown with restaurants all makes it more inviting to people and groups.”
There are currently 17 dedicated pickleball courts lighted for people to play all hours of the day.
“The pickleball facilities at Tattnall Square Park are incredible,” said Macon Pickleball Vice-President Angie Coggins. “Macon-Bibb has done an amazing job with setting us up with probably the best facility in Georgia, and soon to be the best in all of the Southeast.”
The tournament will not only put Macon-Bibb on the pickleball map, but hopefully bring more people here to frequent local.
