On Thursday, September 24, Macon-Bibb County leaders, Recreation Department staff, and community members gathered at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center to cut the ribbon and celebrate the completion of major renovations.

The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)-funded improvements include a new playground, expanded parking, renovations to the baseball and softball field and tennis court, pavilion improvements, a new pump house, and upgrades inside the center, including a conference room, weight room, new flooring, and fresh paint.

“This is exactly what our SPLOST is supposed to do: take the penny our community approved and put it back into neighborhoods in ways families can see and enjoy,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “Frank Johnson Recreation Center has been an important part of the Unionville community for generations, and these improvements make sure it can continue serving our children, families, and neighbors for years to come.”

The project is part of Macon-Bibb County’s continued investment in recreation facilities and public spaces throughout the community.

“We want the community to enjoy it,” said Recreation Department Director Robert Walker. “We offer a great positive recreation program, and this is just an amenity to that to provide a space, a destination for recreation in the Unionville community.”

The improvements give visitors even more opportunities to get outside, stay active, and spend time together, with amenities that include playgrounds, tennis and pickleball courts, and a baseball and softball field with LED lighting.

Frank Johnson Recreation Center has long served as a gathering place in Unionville, and the renovations build on that history while preparing the center to serve the next generation.
