On Thursday, April 23, beginning at 11:00 a.m., Macon-Bibb County will demolish the 100th and 101st abandoned and dilapidated structures since July 1, 2014. These buildings are located at 555 and 581 Cynthia Avenue, just off of Second Street.

“These demolitions put us almost two months ahead of our effort last year. It took us until the very last day of the year to get to 100, and at that time, I charged us with working towards 125 this year,” says Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert. “I’m delighted we’re ahead of schedule, and it’s the work of our departments, contractors, and partner agencies that have gotten us to this point.”

Following these demolitions, the following six are ready to be demolished, which will bring our total to 107.

472 Holloway Street
3843 Travis Boulevard
1119 Sunnydale Drive
722 Mitchell Street

Addressing blight has been a top priority for the government for many years, with house demolition being the most visible. In recent months, Macon-Bibb County has formed a Blight Task Force to prepare for the issuance of $14 million in bonds that will help find new ways to address blight, improve infrastructure, create a sustainable neighborhood model, engage the community, and continue the demolitions.
