Macon-Bibb County Tax Commissioner S. Wade McCord was notified the Georgia Department of Revenue would be extending motor vehicle registrations expiring on or after March 16, 2020 until Friday, May 15, 2020. Full details from the Department of Revenue are below.

The Macon-Bibb Tax Commission Office lobby is already closed to the public due to concerns stemming from the spread of COVID-19.

“This is good news for people that may be unable to pay due to recent financial hardships or are unable to pay online or by using our drive-through service,” says McCord. “We are going to continue to work to serve you, but we also want to protect your health and the health of our employees.”

With the lobby closed, people can make payments and access services in the following ways:

• Use one of the four drive-thru lanes for property tax payments, solid waste payments, and tag renewals. (Driver’s license required.) The Tax Commissioner encourages people to have hand sanitizer in their car for use after handling anything that somebody else might have handled.
• Make online payments at www.maconbibbtax.us.
• Use one of two tag renewal kiosks, but please maintain a six-foot distance from other people. One is at the Kroger on Tom Hill Senior Boulevard and the other is at Kroger on Hartley Bridge Road.
• Send payments through the mail.
• Make a payments over the phone by calling 478-621-6500.
• Drop off a payment after hours in a night deposit box in the first lane of our drive thru. Envelopes are available in the drawers above the drop box.

Information from the Department of Revenue

Due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus, the Georgia Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is extending motor vehicle registrations for Georgia residents that would expire on or after March 16, 2020. MVD is automatically extending those registrations through and including Friday, May 15, 2020.

That means that motorists may continue to drive on Georgia’s highways and roads using a vehicle registered in Georgia with a registration expiration date on or after March 16, 2020, even if the vehicle does not have a replacement 2020 decal. However, motorists must still meet insurance requirements and comply with all other state rules and regulations regarding the vehicle other than timely registration with the local county tag office.

Most motor vehicle owners can renew their registration online. If you can, please do so. Having a current 2020 decal will decrease your chances of being pulled over by a law enforcement officer. If your local county tag office is open, you can also renew your registration at the county tag office.

For those motor vehicle owners that cannot renew their registration online or get to the county tag office before their motor vehicle’s registration expires, you may rely on this bulletin if your motor vehicle’s registration expired on or after March 16, 2020. Print a copy of this bulletin and place it in your glovebox.

MVD is also sending copies of this bulletin to Georgia law enforcement agencies, but all officers may not receive the notice before conducting a traffic stop (and officers in other states may not receive it at all). If a law enforcement officer states that the motor vehicle does not have a current decal, the driver can present a copy of this bulletin to notify the officer of the automatic extension granted by MVD.
