Mayor Miller declares UV Safety Awareness Month

July 28, 2022

Published by

Throughout July, Mayor Lester Miller and Atrium Health Navicent want to remind you to protect yourself against ultraviolet (UV) light. Mayor Miller proclaimed July 2022 as UV Safety Awareness Month in the County.

UV is an invisible type of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps. UV rays can damage skin cells and can cause eye and skin cancers. People who get too much UV light exposure can also develop a weakened immune system, causing their bodies to have a harder time fighting off infection.

You can protect yourself by wearing sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher, staying in the shade, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and seeing a doctor regularly if you’re concerned about a mole or spot on your skin.
