The only official youth biking chapter in the world was recognized by Mayor Lester Miller Tuesday, August 17 with a proclamation declaring August 2021 as U Create Macon Youth Cyclists Month. U Create Macon, a local youth development program, houses the Major Taylor Middle Georgia chapter of biking.
The chapter of about 60 kids was recently invited to ride in the historic Harriet Tubman Ride in Ithaca, New York. They were able to meet silver medalist Nelson Vails, visited Harriet Tubman’s home, and visited three major colleges. They also got to meet U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock.
“I joined the team in the very beginning and to see how much we have grown is truly a blessing. When we started we didn’t have our own bikes and now we’re a model for success,” said Rontravious Smith, a member of U Create Macon and senior at Westside High School. “This program has changed my life and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity. I am so happy that more kids will get a chance to be a U Create kid.”
