First grader at St. Peter Claver School, Jonah McCarthy, pays attention. Not just in the classroom, but in his community. The 6-year-old is observant and knows there are people in his town that need some help, and he specifically wanted to help people at the Brookdale Warming Center.

“They don’t have food, houses, clothes, or water. I want them to smile,” said Jonah. “God was telling me I should do this. I had $13 and I wanted to give my money to the homeless.”

Members at his church, Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, wanted to participate in Jonah’s act of kindness too. With help from his pastor, Jonah collected money.

On Tuesday, April 6, the 6-year-old donated $150 to the Brookdale Warming Center, along with coffee cups, sugar, stirrers, and women’s and men’s socks.

“The amount of love and giving in this community starts very young. Children know when people are in need and need a little help,” said Director of the Brookdale Warming Center, Steve Bell. “Jonah is just as much as a giver in this community and leader in this community as any adult that came up here.”

Since his generous gift, Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church has declared this as his Ministry. His school is proud of him as well.

“I am proud of Jonah’s initiative and his example of living Gospel values as Jesus taught,” said Sister Cheryl Hillig.

When asked if it made him feel if he can make a difference, Jonah said, “Yes, it did. It makes me feel good.”

He says it was nice to see the people he was helping when he dropped off the donations and hopes other kids help too.

If you would like to help support the residents, they need volunteers to sort items and hand out meals. They also need VISA gift cards, new pillows, water, men and women’s underwear, and individually wrapped snacks.
