A dozen high school students from around Macon-Bibb County showed off their basketball skills in front of several members of the community at YouthUp, Inc.’s Shakin’ Macon Hoops for Life Basketball Rally. The competition took place on Wednesday, October 11 inside of the Union Baptist Church Gym.
“We wanted to give kids in our community a safe space during their Fall Break and this competition has kept them excited and focused,” said YouthUp, Inc. Executive Director Amanda Smith. “YouthUp, Inc. was created in response to the high violent crime and death rate among our youth. Children and teens can be taught to overcome impulsivity and think before they act, to manage their emotions, particularly their anger, and learn to resolve their differences with others by using their words, with respect and grace.”
There were three teams that participated: Huskies Power, The Misfits, and YouthBuild Eagles. They each had a team of three players, plus an alternate and played for a cash prize.
Mayor Lester Miller opened the competition with some words of encouragement.
“I am so proud to see events like this happening. Thank you, YouthUp, for all that you do. I want you to know you always have our full support,” said Mayor Miller. “It’s organizations like this that keep our community going and our youth safe. It takes an entire community to raise a child and we can’t do it alone.”
Earlier this year, YouthUp received $20,000 in grant funding from the MVP initiative, and with this money, they have been able to keep their program running and growing.
