Using selfies to prepare for severe weather

The Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is partnering with the National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for #SafePlaceSelfie Day on Wednesday, April 3 to help better prepare our community when severe weather strikes.

“This is a fun chance for us all to identify the safe places in our homes and offices before severe weather strikes,” says EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. “Knowing where to go can help protect you and those around you should the need arise.”

A Safe Place Selfie is a photo of your safe location that you will go to when severe weather threatens and emergency management directs you to “Shelter in Place.” It does not have to be an actual “selfie” of yourself; it can be a pet, an image of the location, or some other creative way to shows you and your family know where to go to shelter in place.

In Macon-Bibb, a safe place is going to be somewhere to help protect you from severe weather like flooding, tornadoes, and hurricanes. This will typically include rooms with no windows, in the middle of the house or building, and as close to the basement as possible.

Once you’ve taken the selfie or photo, post it to your social media pages, tag the EMA, and use the hashtags #SiPMaconBibb and #SafePlaceSelfie. (Links to their pages below.) The most creative pictures will have a chance to win an EMA-branded tote bag with EMA swag in it, such as stickers, pens, hand sanitizer, etc. They’ll also get items to start their disaster kits, such as first aid kits, a can opener, flashlights, glow sticks, blanket, and more.

“By knowing where to shelter safely ahead of a disaster threat or emergency event, you can minimize any hesitation and ensure you know how to act properly and are making the safest decision,” adds Sophie Rosen, EMA Special Projects Officer.
