On Saturday, February 5, the Friends of Rosa Parks Square Board is hosting a celebration in honor of American activist in the civil rights movement, Rosa Parks.
The event will be held in Rosa Parks Square (701 Poplar Street) in Downtown Macon at 11:00 a.m. This the first event the board will hold to celebrate Rosa Parks’ birthday, which is February 4, 1913. She would have been 109 years old this year.
“In Macon it is vital to create spaces of healing that also celebrate the achievements of African Americans,” says President of the Friends of Rosa Parks Square Board Nancy Cleveland. “It reminds everyone that Rosa Parks’ accomplishments are American accomplishments, and everyone regardless of their race should feel a sense of pride.”
The celebration is hosted by Shirley Ellies, known as Mama Mia, and will have food catered by Soul 2 Soul, singers, speakers, and reenactments. It is free and open to everyone.
