Recycling demonstration planned ahead of new collection service

November 1, 2021

As we transition into using service from Ryland Environmental for all trash, recycling, yard debris, and bulk waste collections, we want to make sure everyone knows the right way to dispose of these items.

At 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2, Ryland and the Solid Waste Department will hold a demonstration to showcase recycling. It’s happening in Commission Chambers at Macon City Hall (700 Poplar Street). Media is invited to attend the demonstration and conduct interviews. The public can see the demonstration live on Facebook and the Macon-Bibb website.

“We are taking the next several weeks to make sure the public has ample opportunity to learn about the new collection services, our commitment to a smooth transition, and how they can help our crews collect all the material efficiently,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “This past year has had its bumps for collection services, but we are taking the steps to make sure this necessary service is provided to people’s expectations.”

Last week, there was a demo on how to stage your yard debris and bulk waste for crews to pick it up. You can view the short Trash Talk video for yard debris here and bulk waste here.

About the Collection Services Transition

Beginning January 1, 2022, solid waste services (collection of trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk waste) will be managed by Ryland Environmental. A press conference was held on Wednesday, October 20 to discuss the details, and it can be watched by clicking here.

New trash and recycling carts will be delivered starting in December. Every household will get a new trash can, and if a house has a recycling cart, it will receive a new one.

Trash and recycling collection days will remain the same for most of the county. The southern part of the county currently being served by Ryland will have their collection day go back to Monday, which is what it was prior to this past summer. Yard & bulk waste collections will now be on the same day of the week as trash and recycling. In December, Macon-Bibb County will launch a new interactive map that will allow people to search their collection day by address.

Visit SW.MaconBibb.us/Ryland for additional information through this Solid Waste transition process. Throughout the transition, Macon-Bibb County will provide detailed information about collection services, including best practices, the rollout of a new interactive online route map, when people can expect the new cans, and more.
