On Thursday, December 15, Macon-Bibb County held a street dedication ceremony to honor Senator David E. Lucas, Sr. You can watch the full ceremony here.

In 2020, the Commission approved dedicating a portion of Jeffersonville Road in honor of the Senator. The stretch from Emery Highway until the point where Jeffersonville Road intersects and merges with U.S. Highway 80 is now known as Senator David E. Lucas, Sr. Way.

“There is no more fitting person that we could be standing out here on this crisp morning to be recognizing and to be honoring and dedicating this space to,” said Sheriff David Davis. “He’s been an advocate for this project as well as many other projects throughout this community.”

Senator Lucas has been a strong advocate for the Jeffersonville Road project since it was on an earlier Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) program . Now that the road has been repaved and reconstructed , people will remember his hard work and support for the project as they drive down Jeffersonville Road and see his name.

He was first elected to the state Senate in 2012 to represent Hancock, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson counties as well as portions of Bibb, Houston and Jones counties.

“It’s so touching to see so many people here to share in this occasion,” said Senator Lucas’ wife, Commissioner Elaine Lucas.

Commissioner Lucas and the Senator have four children David Jr., Aris, Leonard, and Albert.

“I was 5 years old when he went into the State House of Representatives. He’s been fighting that long, and I’m 55,” said David Lucas, Jr. “Y’all see the outside and some of the inside of my dad, but my daddy, he’s going to fight every single day for what he believes in. He has raised me to be the same type of man.”

“Someone was asking me ‘are you crying man’, I said I got a tear or two,” said Senator Lucas. “It’s an honor for me to be up here.”
