“The difference between a dreamer and a visionary is that a dreamer has his eyes closed and a visionary has his eyes open” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
That quote is the theme for this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. student Oratorical Contest. The event, hosted by the Recreation Department and the MLK Commission, is happening at the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023. The deadline for students to apply is January 3, 2023, and organizers are still seeking students to sign up and share their vision.
The competition is open to all Bibb County middle and high school students. Their speeches should be three minutes long and formed around this year’s quote mentioned above. Students should answer these questions as a guide for their speech:
- What dreams do you hope to fulfill that will make a major effect on society or the people around you?
- What inspired you to have these dreams? (Ex: economy, social issues, family matters).
- To dream is to dream, but to act is to make that dream come true. What plan of action will you take to make your dreams come true?
- What are a few shortcomings or impediments do you think you may confront. How will you overcome them?
- How does Dr. Martin Luther king Jr’s quote translate to the topic of pursuing your dreams?
Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three speeches from high schoolers, and top three speeches from middle schoolers. High school students will receive $300, $200, and $150 for first, second, and third place. Middle school students will receive $200, $100, and $75 for first, second, and third place.
