Bike Walk Macon gears up for Open Streets on Houston Avenue

by | Mar 10, 2023 | News

From Bike Walk Macon- Open Streets Macon will return with a new route on Houston Avenue this Sunday, March 12, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Bike Walk Macon is enthusiastic to partner with Macon-Bibb County District 2 Community Family and Commissioner Paul Bronson to bring this important community initiative to a new neighborhood to promote safe and car-free transportation, healthy outdoor activity, and community engagement using our city streets.

Open Streets Macon is inspired by a world-class program proven to positively impact healthy behavior by repurposing existing public streets and providing access to free recreation space. All Maconites are invited to the first 2023 route this Sunday where four-blocks of street will be closed to drivers and open for pedestrians to engage with neighbors and friends, and support small business participants. Attendees can hop on the route at any point – there is no start or end – and experience Open Streets Macon at their own pace.

More than 30 local organizations and businesses will offer free, engaging experiences along the route. Some of the highlighted activities include:

●  Car-free stretches of street to run, play, bike, and dance

●  Giant outdoor skating rink

●  DJ set with Soopa Dave and SpeakerBaux Ads

●  Free hotdogs, soda, and snacks

●  Inflatable bounce house

●  Adoptable pets

●  Free health checks

●  Cornhole, yard games, and various family-friendly activities

●  Bike Parade at 1:00 PM in front of Bruce Elementary to kick off Open Streets Macon.

A full list of activities can be found at www.openstreetsmacon.com/houstonave.

“Houston Avenue is a major artery in the blood flow of this city and should be intentionally cared for, and this is one of the many steps to show that we do care,” states District 2 Commissioner, Paul Bronson. “Having the opportunity to see and volunteer with Bike Walk Macon’s Open Streets initiative opened my eyes to a different approach to teaching and shifting the minds of our community when it comes to pedestrian and bike safety. I believe that this event will do the same for our children, families, and business owners in the area while opening the door of discussion for future projects.”
