From the Macon Water Authority:

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) will be hosting the 16th Annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday March 5, 2022, at Javors Lucas Lake – the Authority’s 589-acre drinking water reservoir located at 150 Broach Lane, off of Upper River Road. The free event is open to children and youth from ages 3 to 17.

On-site registration for the Kids Fishing Derby will begin at 6:30 a.m., prior to the fishing starting at 7:00 a.m. Those participating kids wishing to compete for prizes in four age group categories – or for the grand prize of the biggest catch of the day – can enjoy the weigh-in at 10:00 a.m. Refreshments will be provided, but participants must bring their own bait and tackle. No fishing license is required to fish during the event.

The MWA hosts its annual Kids Fishing Derby to offer an opportunity for outdoor recreation for local families, while providing public education on the importance of protecting and preserving drinking water resources. The MWA Kids Fishing Derby also helps to promote the sport of Fishing among anglers and within the community.

Although last year’s Kids Fishing Derby was cancelled due to the pandemic, the MWA hosted a very successful competition in 2020, after moving the event to March, just days prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown. This year’s Derby returns to the first Saturday in March. Due to this time of year, the site of the Kids Fishing Derby on Javors Lucas Lake has been stocked with trout for the young anglers.

The MWA Kids Fishing Derby is an annual event that is organized by the Macon Water Authority’s Outdoor Recreation Committee, with support from the Macon Water Alliance.

The Macon Water Alliance is the Authority’s non-profit subsidiary founded to provide environmental education for citizens in Middle Georgia and water-resource-focused assistance for MWA customers.
