On Thursday, January 4, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission gathered for a wreath-laying ceremony in Rosa Parks Square. You can watch the full ceremony here.

The wreath was placed in honor of the Civil Rights icon who, on December 1, 1955, refused to give up her bus seat for a white person. Her legacy, and the legacy the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., lives on in Macon-Bibb County through many events aimed at unity and education.

“We want to remind people of Dr. King’s sacrifice, of what he gave and left behind for this community,” said board member and District 3 Commissioner Elaine Lucas.

“We’ve come a long way and things have improved but we’re not there yet,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “Dr. King is etching us along, one day at a time, one street at a time, to make sure that we continue to move forward together.”

Following the wreath ceremony, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission held its first meeting of the new year to talk about upcoming events Dr. King’s Birthday, the annual march which will be held on Monday, January 15, and more. The goal of the Commission is to raise awareness and encourage togetherness in Macon-Bibb year-round…not JUST on anniversaries and birthdays of important Civil Rights Leaders.

You can get involved by attending events or by hosting your own. To see the calendar, and sign up to host, visit the website at www.MaconBibb.us/MLK.
