On Monday, April 4, crews in the Solid Waste, Public Works, and Parks & Beautification Departments were treated to a special lunch thanks to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and Macon NAACP branch.
More than 120 people in the departments got to enjoy a hearty meal of chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, green beans, potato salad, key lime pie, red velvet cake, and drinks. This is the sixth year the lunch has been provided to crews in remembrance of Dr. King’s speech to sanitation workers in Memphis during their strike. Dr. King spoke to them on April 3, YEAR, the day before he was assassinated.
“Each year, we take time to thank these crews because of the work they do to keep our community clean and safe, and we do it in remembrance of Dr. King and his support for their predecessors,” says Commissioner Elaine Lucas.
“We want to say, ‘thank you’ for all you do in our neighborhoods,” Macon NAACP Branch President Gwenette Westbrooks told the group gathered in the Parks & Beautification building.
“It’s great that our community takes this time to recognize our crews every year,” says Solid Waste Supervisor Maurice Jackson. “This is something we look forward to and appreciate the support.”
