On Thursday, September 1, Mayor Lester Miller launched the Macon-Bibb Mayor’s Literacy Alliance (MLA). It’s a partnership with Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and the Bibb County School District (BCSD) to increase the graduation rate, decrease the drop-out rate, and lower the adult illiteracy rate by 50 % over the next 10 years.
MLA serves as an umbrella for key organizations from public and private sectors of Macon-Bibb to collaborate as a Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP).
“Literacy is an important element in becoming productive citizens. It enables both children and adults to become critical and creative thinkers,” said MLA Director Jim Montgomery. “Having literacy experiences facilitates competence in listening and talking, reading, and writing skills, which are so important in life.
“We can only be a great community if we work together to address challenges that everyone needs to be successful. One of those barriers to success is literacy,” said Mayor Miller. “We can’t do this effort without our partners.”
MLA will partner with all existing area schools, colleges and universities, community organizations, volunteer community leaders, students, and adult learners (public / private) to develop and implement a community plan for addressing literacy needs. They will each work to strategically raise community awareness and engagement by utilizing a focused agenda for improving literacy
“If there’s anything that’s paramount for us as a school system, not just for our students, but for Macon-Bibb County, it is that we create the most literate students as early as possible so that every single grade level counts all the way to the end of our journey together – that being 12th grade,” said Dr. Sims.
Organizations interested in sponsoring literacy-related activities or having their planned events included on MLA’s Literacy Month calendar may reach out to the Macon-Bibb Mayor’s Literacy Alliance at maconbibbliteracyalliance@gmail.com.
Mayor Miller also proclaimed September as Literacy Month. You can read the full proclamation here. Literacy Month in Macon-Bibb County represents our community’s commitment to improving literacy rates. Those events are listed below.
