“…Some Veterans left everything on an island in the Pacific…on a hillside in Korea…in the deserts of Iraq…the jungles of Vietnam…the valleys of Afghanistan…and so many more places. Our Veterans are courageous, brave, and strong-willed. This country was made for you and me.”
Those are the words of Retired Army SPC Manuel Jackson, Jr. He was the guest speaker at this year’s Memorial Day Service at Historic Linwood Cemetery. Each year, the Macon Cemetery Preservation Corporation (MCPC) hosts a service to recognize and honor our service members, past and present, with ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
This year’s Memorial Day Ceremony featured a presentation of colors by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office honor guard, a performance the National anthem, remarks from MCPC President Yolanda Latimore, and prayer. A trumpeter performed Taps to mark the end of the reverent ceremony. You can watch the ceremony here on our Facebook page and click here to view a photo album.
A group of volunteers meets every Saturday morning to cut grass, clear weeds, and beautify Historic Linwood Cemetery. They’re always looking for additional support. If you’d like to get involved, meet them at the cemetery on Walnut Street at 9 a.m. on any Saturday.
