On April 29, the ninth anniversary of his passing, family and friends of Rev. Dr. Lonzy Edwards chose to celebrate his life. Dozens of people gathered at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church to celebrate the street dedication in honor of the late Rev. Dr. Edwards. You can watch the full ceremony here.

“His life was a path. His life was a street towards justice, service, and love,” said Kelda Cubit, who said Edwards was more than a mentor, he was like a father.  “From Sparta, Georgia to the street that now says his name, Reverend Dr. Edwards has showed us that greatness starts with serving others.”

In February 2024, previous District 3 Commissioner Elaine Lucas brought an ordinance forward that would dedicate a portion of Millerfield Road from Century Place to Finney Circle in honor of Edwards, naming it Rev. Dr. Lonzy Edwards Way.

“Lonzy Edwards was an icon in the community, and he wasn’t given anything, he earned it. All the good things we are saying and thinking about him today, he earned all that,” said Lucas.

Rev. Dr. Edwards attended Duke University School of Law before settling in Macon to build his life and law practice, eventually co-founding Edwards & Youmas, LLC. He felt a call to delve deeper into servant leadership, through ministry, which led him to join the pastorage at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. He also served the citizens of Bibb County as a County Commissioner from 2007 until 2013.

In addition to his roles as a community leader, counselor, business owner, and pastor, one of Rev. Dr. Lonzy Edwards’ proudest accomplishments was serving as a loving husband to Nancy Edwards, devoted father to his two sons, Lonzy (Lowe) Edwards, Jr. and Roland Edwards, and grandfather to his granddaughter.

“My boys and I are grateful that you have shown up today to rejoice with us and say thank you to the community for recalling a life that was spent trying to do his best to make this community all that it was capable of,” said Nancy Edwards.
