Lead with Literacy held its annual Holiday Hangout Winter Vacation Mini- Camp over Christmas break for girls in our community.

It was designed to provide a safe space during the winter break for girls in 3rd through 8th grades to engage in meaningful reading, writing, and social activities. The all-girl inclusive environment allows them to make new friends, participate in fun activities and discussions and interact with positive adult mentors that encourage and support their dreams and aspirations.

“We want to allow the girls an opportunity to experience reading as a social activity by creating a fun and relaxed environment where they can explore new books, authors, genres while interacting with their peers,” said Tamika Withers with Lead with Literacy. “The goal is to help the girls foster a love for reading that goes beyond the classroom.”

This was the 5th year the 2-day minicamp and it was held at the South Bibb Recreation Center where 14 girls (grades 3rd- 12th) participated. They participated in several workshops which included Social Etiquette & How to Brunch, Hot Chocolate Book Tasting, and Gingerbread House Building on a Budget. Each girl received a free book, gingerbread scented gift set and a hot chocolate mug as a gift.

Lead with Literacy is a Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) grant recipient and partner. It provides multiple opportunities throughout the year for students and families by promoting reading and fostering literacy skills.
