Lead with Literacy families had a special day last weekend by going to the movie theater for Macon Family Time. About 90 people from19 families were treated by the nonprofit to watch The Super Mario Bros movie at AmStar Cinemas.
Macon Family Time is a literacy and learning program that stems from Lead with Literacy. One of the program goals is to promote literacy and family bonding. After watching the movie, each family received a book that paired with the movie to take home to read and discuss together.
“This is one of our family activities that we use with our parents to model creative ways to make meaningful reading connections,” said Tamika Withers with Lead with Literacy. “It was a great time reconnecting with the families that have graduated from the program and introducing them to the new families that are currently enrolled in the program.”
Macon Family Time is funded through Macon-Bibb County’s Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) program and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. Lead with Literacy received a $40,000 grant to implement this program, which is designed to engage families in meaningful reading and learning activities.
The third cohort for this program season will graduate on Friday, May 12.
