Landfill offers free drop-offs on Tuesdays in May

The Solid Waste Department is hosting a May Madness Spring Clean Up to help keep debris and bulk off of the streets. Starting Tuesday, May 4, 2021 residents can drop off any bulk items and/or building material at the Walker Road Landfill (920 11th Street) for FREE every Tuesday throughout the month of May.

As part of the Clean Streets Matter initiative, the landfill wants to offer residents free disposal of items such as sinks, tubs, cabinets, sofas, chairs, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, mattresses, etc. Normally, the disposal limit is 500 pounds per calendar month at a rate of $34.09 per ton. Those fees will be waved May 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Residents must show a valid driver’s license.

The landfill does NOT accept yard debris, liquids, light bulbs or batteries. Tires can also be dropped off, but are not part of the free drop-off. Tires will require the usual fee to cover costs for transportation, since they are sent to another facility.

  • Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful has supported or helped plan more than 90 neighborhood cleanups;
  • crews from Macon-Bibb County cleaned more than 2 million pounds of debris from about 200 illegal dump sites;
  • the Macon Water Authority has swept more than 650,000 pounds of dirt, leaves, pine straw, and litter from more than 77 miles of road; and
  • more than 2.5 million pounds of yard waste has been collected.
