The Georgia State Firefighters Association (GSFA) has recently recognized Macon-Bibb’s Fire Safety Educator Jeremy Webb for being selected as the recipient of the 2019 Educator of the Year. In his role with Macon-Bibb Webb goes to schools, public meetings, businesses, and community events to teach fire safety and reduce the fire rate and number of fire deaths.

This award honors a member of Georgia’s fire service community who has exemplified a dedication to educating residents about the significance of fire safety and prevention. Webb was presented this award during the 2019 Georgia Fire Service Conference awards ceremony held in Albany, Georgia.

“I really look forward to coming to work; it’s something I enjoy doing,” says Webb. “Just seeing the reduced number of fires we have brings me great pleasure. In 2015, we had 15 fire deaths, in 2016 we had 10, in 2017 we had 7, and last year we actually had zero. From our suppression team to our fire prevention team, we all come together to make that possible. It feels good to see our hard work being recognized.”

“One of the things that I enjoy the most about being Fire Chief is hiring young firefighters and watching them grow and develop, and when opportunities arise to recognize them for their outstanding work toward our Mission it’s such a great reward,” says Fire Chief Marvin Riggins. “Jeremy’s commitment to excellence and his background and knowledge have been instrumental in making our Community Risk reduction and our Fire Safety campaigns a success.”

Webb became the Educator for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department in 2015. Since then, he has continuously made an impact within the community. Displaying endless enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication, Webb has proven to be proud of the work that he does. Webb spends countless hours doing research to make sure he is educating the public in the best way possible. Securing a grant from Firehouse Subs to purchase a Bull Ex laser fire extinguisher is just one of the many ways he has been able to do so.

Even after hours, Jeremy is partnering with Safe Kids, Neighborhood Watch, Senior Citizen’s Programs, Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful, and several other programs to make sure he is consistently giving back to his community. In 2018, the Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful gave him their Educator of the Year Award for his passion and dedication to his community.
