On Wednesday, March 31, students from Howard Middle School’s FBLA and DECA clubs – along with their advisors, Principal Tony Jones, and Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones – presented a donation to support the residents of the Brookdale Warming Center. Included in the donation were several boxes of snacks, about half a dozen scarves, and a check for $1,350 to help with the operations. The money was collected by asking students, faculty, and staff to donate their spare change over the course of about six weeks.
“We choose the BWC bc they help those in need and those who are less fortunate, and that’s who FBLA and DECA help,” Ryan Rodgers, President of the FBLA club and Vice president of the DECA club at Howard Middle. “From this I learned a lot about how to be a leader and how to help those in need.”
“It means a lot when you have young people step up to do the right thing, especially for the people who need us the most,” Mayor Lester Miller told them. ““To come here and serve with yourself hands means a lot to everyone here.”
“We learned so much about the Warming Center and the generosity of our students, ” said Abby Hardy, Vice President of the FBLA club.
“[Our schools] are part of the community in more ways than just educating children. We want our students to be a part of our community,” said Dr. Jones. “When we talk about Victory in Progress, these students embody that.”
