Honoring our Heroes on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, November 11, there were two local ceremonies to honor our current and past military members. At Historic Linwood Cemetery, the Macon

Cemetery Preservation Corporation hosted its annual service. The featured speaker was Retired Army Captain Quintisia B. Kelly, who spoke about service extending beyond the battlefield, and how we can all serve in our communities. There was a presentation of colors from the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department and a JROTC group. At the end of the ceremony, Senator Raphael Warnock spoke about the historical significance of Linwood Cemetery, which is where there is a monument for Macon’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Rodney Davis. You can watch the ceremony here.

Middle Georgia State University (MGA) and Macon-Bibb hosted their annual observance at Coleman Hill downtown. It was held at the monument to the 151st Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Rainbow Division at the base of Coleman Hill. Many of those service members lost their lives in World War I. MGA President Christopher Blake presented challenge coins to all veterans in attendance, and he and Mayor Lester Miller laid a wreath at the memorial in honor of all our veterans.
