Macon Area Habitat for Humanity has been a crucial part in tackling blight in our community and restoring those properties. The national non-profit organization aims to help people repair and improve their homes and neighborhoods.
With Mayor Lester Miller’s Blight Fight Campaign, Macon Area Habitat is staying busy working to get more community partners, such as the Macon Bacon, to help build homes on the newly vacant lots.
“Habitat is really an end result,” said Macon Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Ivey Hall. “It’s an opportunity for us to take properties that were blighted and turn them back into a useful piece of property, and return them to the tax rolls for Macon-Bibb County.”
Macon Area Habitat for Humanity has been working in the Lynmore Estates neighborhood since 2005, an area where several houses were taken down as part of the Mayor Miller’s initiative.
“Not only are we fixing homes and properties, but the neighbors are also starting to fix up their properties. We’re seeing a true ripple effect as people start to see what the neighborhood could really be,” said Hall.
