On Tuesday, May 13, 35 students graduated from the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS).
“This was such a great group of students who will be incredible leaders one day,” said Community Affairs Executive Director Dr. Henry Ficklin. “GCAPS has not only provided them with knowledge about how government works, but the ability to see themselves in powerful roles that make a difference in this community. I am so proud of them and can’t wait to see what they will do next.”
This year’s GCAPS class was composed students from different high schools in Macon-Bibb County. They will each be presented with a diploma to honor their completion of the immersive program that teaches young people about government operations in our community and state.
“I love the program, it’s given me a nice overview of civic engagement and getting me engaged in the community,” said Ziereyal Taylor, a senior at Southwest High School. “If I’m speaking to fellow high school students, I would say join.”
Throughout this school year, students were given an overview of several departments within Macon-Bibb including the Mayor’s Office and the Commission, Emergency Management Agency, Fire Department, as well as the Board of Elections Office, Macon Water Authority, Industrial Authority, and Courthouse.
