As the school year comes to an end, our Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) have been busy exploring and learning about their community and state. This month, they had two field trips.

The first trip happened on Thursday, April 6 where they went to Lake Tobesofkee’s Sandy Beach Park. They learned about the operation of the recreational facility and the Bibb County Cooperative Extension Program, which helps members in our community become healthier, more productive, financially independent. The Cooperative Extension has been instrumental in our Gardens at Brookdale initiative.

This week, on Monday, April 24 students went to on one of their final educational trips to our State Capitol and Federal Reserve Bank. They got the opportunity to meet and talk to state leaders and learn more about how the government works at a state level. At the Reserve Bank, students saw something that blew their minds – thousands of dollars being shred in tiny pieces.

“It has been so rewarding to watch these students learn and see things they may have never seen in their lives,” said Executive Director of Community Affairs Dr. Henry Ficklin. “This program allows them to also start thinking about careers they may want to explore. The students are really excited.”

Students will graduate from GCAPS in May.
