In an orientation event on Thursday, October 6, a group of high school students came to City Hall for their a Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students GCAPS) Orientation. Coordinator and Executive Director of Community Affairs, Dr. Henry Ficklin, spoke to the student leaders about what their year will look like learning about our local government.

Throughout the year, the students will visit departments across Macon-Bibb to get a hands-on learning experience. Leaders from various county departments spoke about what their offices do and how the students benefit from local government services. The students then introduced themselves to their new classmates and county leaders.

“This year, I’m very excited for this robust group of young people,” says Dr. Henry Ficklin. “We’re ready to give these students a thorough and fun education in how their city operates. It’s important for our youngest community members to engaged with their government, as it can help inform and interest them as they move past school into their career paths.”

The students are from nearly public, private, and charter high schools, as well as homeschool programs. If you’d like to learn more about the program, and follow their adventures, visit the GCAPS Facebook page here.
