On Friday, July 7, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department held an Appointment/Promotion Ceremony for two new Sergeants and three firefighters who were appointed to Fire Prevention Inspector, Fire Training EMS Instructor, and Fire Training Dual Enrollment Instructor. You can watch the full ceremony here.
Each firefighter was pinned individually by a loved one in front of their families and were sworn in together as a group.
“I always want you to remember this moment and challenge,” Chief Shane Edwards told the new leaders. “Keep your intelligence and professional. I want to make sure you all stay focused. You can always come to one of us. If you’re not successful, we’re not successful. We are here for you.”
Sergeants will be responsible for driving the fire apparatuses, getting firefighters to and from scenes safely, and supporting them when fighting fires. The Prevention Inspector will be in charge of keeping our firefighters and community safe by being in charge of permitting and inspecting and making sure everything is up to code. The Training EMS Instructor will make sure all firefighters get the proper EMS training.
The Fire Training Dual Enrollment Instructor is a new position created for the training program developed by the Fire Department, Central Georgia Technical College, Bibb County School District, and W.S. Hutchings College and Career Academy, which begins this fall. The Instructor, who is now Sgt. Lawrence Marable, will be responsible for teaching high school seniors enrolled at Hutchings fire training throughout the school year. By the time the seniors graduate high school, they could be eligible to apply for a job with the Fire Department. Click here to learn more about the program.
“Teaching is something I have always wanted to explore and I love firefighting, so this is really the best of both,” said Sgt. Marable. “I’m really excited to take on this new role and help high school students learn more about this public safety career.”
“This is an outstanding group of firefighters who deserve to be in these leadership positions,” said Fire Chief Edwards. “They have worked hard to be where they are at. We’re very proud of them and are excited to see them continue to grow in this department.”
