On Wednesday, February 15, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department held a ceremony to celebrate the promotion of 48 firefighters to Sergeants. Dozens of loved ones filled the Howard High School Auditorium as each firefighter’s name was called out to receive their new helmets. You can watch the full ceremony here.
“Our firefighters have worked hard to be the best,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “We are so proud of all they have accomplished this far and are looking forward to seeing them succeed while serving our community.”
This round of promotions was made possible with the move to a new schedule of shifts in January 2022. With the new shift schedule, more leadership positions became available.
A Sergeant in the Fire Department is responsible for driving & operating the Fire apparatus, maintaining and checking out all of the equipment assigned to their apparatus, and backfilling the company officers’ position in their absence.
