Fire Prevention Week in Macon-Bibb

Our Fire Department held a celebration event on October 5 at Headquarters to mark the start of Fire Prevention Week. It’s observed every year at the beginning of October to educate everyone about Fire Safety, remind them to get a working smoke detector, and to bring attention to fire safety initiatives in our community. You can watch the whole ceremony here.

The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” It’s a reminder that if you hear three loud beeps from your smoke detector, it means smoke or fire are there and to get to safety and call 911! If you hear a single chirp from your smoke detector every 30 to 60 seconds, your battery is low and needs to be replaced. The Macon-Bibb Fire Department will come install a smoke detector in your home free of charge. Give them a call at (478) 751-9180 to set it up.

At this year’s Fire Prevention Week kickoff ceremony, the Honor Guard presented colors, there was a recorded performance by the Mount de Sales Chorale ensemble, and Chief Brenda Thomas spoke about the history of Fire Prevention Week. Interim Fire Chief Shane Edwards and Mayor Lester Miller, along with other fire officials, also presented several students with awards for the annual poster and essay contest. You can view the list of winners here.

Chief Edwards also announced the Rookie of the Year, Jordan Bonbrake. You can read more about Bonbrake here.

Fire Safety Educators want to remind everyone to make a plan for their family in the event of a fire. If you need help doing so, or you need a smoke detector, call the Fire Department at (478) 751-9180.
