The Fire Department has a week of events planned to help educate and promote safety as part of National Fire Prevention Week, which is from Sunday-Saturday, October 9-15.

To kindle the enthusiasm, there will be an awards ceremony and celebration event at the Macon Mall (3661 Eisenhower Parkway) at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12. It’s happening on the lower level, on the Mall near Burlington Coat Factory .

Fire Chief Shane Edwards, Mayor Lester Miller, and Bibb County School District Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims are all slated to speak. 31 students will receive awards for the Fire Safety Essay Contest. There’s also a special award for a young person who recently went above and beyond to save a life.

“We’re always working to educate people on fire safety and how to be prepared, but we especially want to engage with the community during Fire Prevention week,” says Fire Educator Sergeant Jeremy Webb. “We’ve got events planned all week to visit people, connect with people of all ages, and invite the public to meet our firefighters and get a closer look at what we do. Fire prevention is a team effort, and we invite everyone in Macon-Bibb to be part of that team!”

A list of planned events is below. There will be a chance for kids (or the young at heart) to tour a fire truck, participate in safety activities, receive giveaways like coloring books, and more. Firefighters will also be canvassing neighborhoods to meet their neighbors and give out smoke detectors. Everyone is invited to tour their nearby fire stations next week, so you can get to know the people serving and protecting your community.

To set up a tour for your group or family, call the Fire Administration Office at (478) 751-9180. Visit the Fire Department on Facebook here to follow along with the fun.
