The Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department is holding its annual Student Oratorical Competition in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s happening at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 16, at the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center (132 Willie Smokie Glover Drive). This year’s theme comes from Dr. King’s quote, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” Bibb County High School students wrote and submitted essays formed with this quote in mind, and the five finalists will present their speeches at the event Sunday. 

“With this contest, we try to encourage our students to utilize their critical thinking skills to dig deeper. We all know how important Dr. King was and is to the Civil Rights movement. Our goal is to help them learn and grow while presenting their own ideas about the theme,” says Recreation Director Robert Walker. “We’re proud of these young people and their contributions to our community. Recreation isn’t just playtime – it’s mind, body, AND soul.”

A panel of judges will vote on the speeches based on their content and delivery. First place will receive $750, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $250. Media members are invited to attend and conduct interviews.
