Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) partners gathered at a special location for their most recent Emergency Support Function (ESF) meeting. This month, the group met at Bibb County Sheriff’s Animal Services, where members not only discussed emergency preparedness but also got an inside look at how the facility operates.

During the meeting, Animal Services Manager Tracey Weathers gave EMA partners a tour of the facility, introducing them to some of the dogs and cats currently in their care, including several puppies and kittens. The tour also provided an opportunity for ESF partners to learn more about the daily operations of the shelter and the services it provides for the community.

Staff talked about the important role Animal Services plays during natural disasters and large-scale emergencies. When severe weather or other disasters impact Macon-Bibb County and surrounding communities, the facility may be called on to shelter pets and assist with the care of animals displaced during those events.

“These meetings are an important way for our partners to better understand each other’s roles,” said EMA Deputy Director Robert McCord. “Animal Services is a critical part of our emergency response, especially when residents are forced to evacuate or need a safe place for their pets during a disaster.”

The monthly ESF meetings bring together representatives from multiple agencies and organizations that work together during emergencies. While these groups often collaborate closely during disasters, the regular meetings allow them to stay connected, share updates, and strengthen relationships before an emergency occurs.

By meeting proactively throughout the year, EMA and its partners can ensure they are better prepared to coordinate and respond when the community needs them most.
