EMA helping families prepare for disasters

August 30, 2015

September is National Preparedness Month, and the Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is participating in FEMA’s national and Georgia’s statewide campaign to help families prepare for any disaster. EMA will educate people through a series of educational meetings, local media coverage, and social media posts about how to be prepared ahead of a disaster, stay safe during a disaster, and recover as quickly as possible following a disaster.

“People should take action now to make sure their friends, family, and pets know how to remain safe during an emergency and how to quickly recover,” says EMA Director Don Druitt.

Throughout the month, EMA will be posting information to Facebook and Twitter about the different types of threats, how they can impact you, and what you can do to prepare for each. Each week, a public forum will be held in Commission Chambers at Government Center (700 Poplar Street) to show people how to best prepare.

About Ready Georgia

Ready Georgia is a statewide campaign designed to educate and empower Georgians to prepare for and respond to natural disasters, pandemic outbreaks, potential terrorist attacks, and other large-scale emergencies. Its aim is to prepare citizens for maintaining self-sufficiency for at least 72 hours following an emergency

Ready Georgia promotes three key steps to readiness: be informed about potential threats and protective measures to take in emergency situations; make a plan for communicating and reconnecting with family members if you are separated during an emergency; and build a kit of emergency supplies that allows you and your family to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours following a disaster.

For more information, visit www.ready.ga.gov, download the recently improved Ready Georgia mobile app, or visit them on Facebook or YouTube to get prepared and stay up to date on weather conditions.

About National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month was founded after 9/11 to increase awareness and encourage action for emergency preparedness nationwide. This is accomplished through FEMA’s Ready campaign and partnerships with state and local emergency management agencies.

The Ready campaign encourages everyone to take steps to be more prepared where they spend their time, such as work, school, home, and throughout their communities.
