Contractor selected for first new round of Paving the Way

August 20, 2025

On Tuesday, August 19, Commissioners unanimously approved hiring an independent contractor for road repaving and resurfacing services. This is all part of the Paving the Way program and the first of the 36.18 miles of roads for repaving that were put out for bid in July.

“We are moving forward even faster with our Paving the Way program, and I expect to see major improvements on these roads beginning in in the next few weeks,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “The condition of our roads is one of our community’s top priorities, and we are putting more money toward it than ever before.”

Out of the eight contractors that submitted RFPs, local business Professional Paving Services, LLC’s bid met the guidelines and came in with the lowest price. The contract is for $1,896,165 and will be paid from Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant (LMIG) and the 2018 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds.

Work on these almost 9 miles of road (listed below) should begin in the next 10 days. Additional sections of road may be added later once the final costs are determined.

Roads for this round were selected through a Roadbotics study of all 1,100 miles of county-owned, paved roads that ranked them 1-5, with 5 being the worst. With these 36 miles of roads repaved, nearly all roads rated 3 and above will have been touched.

Earlier this year all 1,100 miles were rescanned by StreetScan, ranking them 1-100, and giving the county a more comprehensive understanding of the need.  From that rating, a set of criteria was applied and 459 roads totaling almost 130 miles and $44 million were identified for the next rounds.

“We identified the worst roads in our community and are focusing first on them, as well as roads that are heavily traveled every day,” says Mayor Miler. “There isn’t a part of our county that won’t have major improvements for daily travel.”

At the Commission Meeting on August 5, Mayor Miller presented the list and let the Commission know funding would come from the General Fund, LMIG, and SPLOST. Macon-Bibb is currently grouping those roads by proximity and preparing those groupings to be put out to bid.

In the first round of Paving the Way, nearly $15 million was allocated from the general fund, SPLOST, and LMIG. The amount allocated in the first round was already nearly five times more than used in previous years. Between 2020 and now, the County repaved 45.539 miles of road.
