Macon-Bibb County and Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful’s (KMBBC) new initiative, Clean Streets Matter, continued for the second week. This resulted in tens of thousands of pounds of trash and debris removed from the streets, new neighborhood cleanups scheduled, dozens of service requests filled or submitted, and more.
“Through the feedback I received from my Transition Team, we identified clean neighborhoods and streets as one way we could improve recreation, tourism, and economic development for our community, and we know it helps with public safety,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “I’m proud we have the people and organizations in place to attack this problem that is found in every section of our community and begin making a difference in people’s lives and their neighborhoods.”
In the second week of Clean Streets Matter, 90 service requests were closed, 97 were opened, and 331 remain to be addressed. By cleaning up 40 illegal dumps, 151.87 tons (303,736 pounds) of trash, furniture, appliances, and more were removed from the streets, curbs, and rights of way. “Hosting regular cleanups in your neighborhoods strengthens our sense of community and instills pride in the area we live,” says Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Executive Director Caroline Childs. “It also helps keep areas from getting to the point where we need to call in heavy equipment and crews from the city.”
Since announcing Clean Streets Matter, six clean-ups have been scheduled (including two this past weekend) and five more are being planned. See below for a list of dates and areas and contact KMBB at (478) 330-7054 for information on how you can help them.
“Our crews are truly making a difference in our neighborhoods with this focused work, and still keeping up with their normal routes, filling potholes, and more, and we should all take a moment to thank them,” adds Mayor Miller. “I also want to thank our neighborhood groups for rising to the challenge of hosting their own cleanups, and to encourage others to join with us. Our crews can’t do this alone, and they can’t be everywhere at all times.”

About Clean Streets Matter
Clean Streets Matter kicked off in Historic Pleasant Hill on Friday, January 15, by Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller –Commissioners, representatives from Keep-Macon Bibb Beautiful (KMBB), residents of the neighborhood, and crews from the Public Works, Solid Waste, and Parks & Beautification Department.
The goal of this initiative is to more effectively identify and clean up illegal dumps, piles of waste and debris, dead animals, downed trees, eviction material and more, as well as to engage residents to host neighborhood cleanups. A website has been launched to show people a map of open and closed issues, and to provide them a way to request other services. Once an area has been cleaned, Macon-Bibb County needs the community’s assistance in keeping it that way by reporting areas of concern, reporting people and companies illegally dumping trash, and holding neighborhood cleanups.
