On December 8 at Historical Terminal Station, Macon-Bibb County hosted a second Community Information Meeting regarding its Community-wide Brownfield Assessment Grant. The County’s grant was awarded in 2015, and work has been under way.

Per the Environmental Protection Agency, Brownfield Sites are defined as real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which are complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, controlled substances, petroleum, or petroleum products.

The funding is being used to develop redevelopment strategies, inventory Brownfield properties, and determine the extent and degree of environmental impact at sites that have the greatest potential for redevelopment and/or pose a threat to public health. Based on the assessment data, cleanup plans will be developed for the assessed properties with the intent of remediating and redeveloping so as to catalyze the redevelopment of other area properties.

During the meeting, the community was informed of the status of the project, and those present were provided with the opportunity to suggest additional sites for assessment and discuss redevelopment preferences.
