Our Blight Fight initiative reached and has already passed the 150 blight removal mark, just shy of the one year anniversary of the first house being torn down. On Wednesday, March 30 crews removed the 150th blighted structure with the demolition of the house at 849 Lilly Avenue.

“Reaching 150 is a milestone, but we’re not done yet. Since the beginning for the Blight Fight, we said it was not a one and done project,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “As we near the one-year mark of this effort, I want to thank all our crews, departments, and partners. They have made this a priority, continuously working hard to make us a safer Macon-Bibb.”

In the following days, crews took down two more houses, one on Crisp Street and one on Penn Avenue, bringing the total to 152.

The Blight Fight was launched on April 14, 2021 with a starting goal to remove 30 blighted houses in 30 days. Crews completed that plan 9 days early and continued to work on other uninhabitable and dilapidated structures, which ranged from houses to commercial buildings. Each structure in this process was identified by the Code Enforcement Department as either burned or classified as Vacant/Abandoned/Dilapidated.
