On Tuesday, December 20, Macon-Bibb County marked 400 #BlightFight demolitions by tearing down the blighted structure at 3272 Vineville Avenue, the site of the former Just-a-Biscuit, Burger Chef, and other restaurants. It has been vacant and deteriorating for many years now.
“This is a heavily traveled road through our city, with thousands of vehicles passing it every day,” said Mayor Miller. “Just like we have removed hundreds of blighted structures from our neighborhoods, we must also remove the constant eyesores people pass every day.”
Commissioners, department heads, demolition contractors, and many others gathered to watch our Public Works Department quickly remove the blighted structure from the major thoroughfare. You can watch the full demolition here.
One of Mayor Miller’s early actions (based on community feedback) was to be more proactive with removing blight from the community, especially since there were blighted structures that had sat vacant and deteriorating for nearly a decade. The #BlightFight began in April 2021, and between then and December 31, 100 structures and units were demolished. The demolition on Tuesday means there have been 300 demolitions in 2022, bringing the two-year total to 400.
“This has been a herculean effort, one we began putting together as soon as I took office, and I want to thank #TeamMaconBibb for making it a priority and finding ways to speed up the process,” added Mayor Miller. “We have become better at every step of the process, brought on additional partners, and ultimately become much more effective and quicker at fighting back blight away from the homes of our friends, families, and neighbors.”
The #BlightFight is a partnership of multiple departments and agencies, including Code Enforcement, the Attorney’s Office, Public Works, Facilities Management, Macon Water Authority, Terracon, Southern Equipment, Casteel Construction, The Waste Basket, SACAL, M&M Environmental, J Waste & Demolition, Analytical & Environmental Services, Georgia Power, and Atlanta Gas Light.
