In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who worked in Kentucky coals mines as a child and was the son of former slaves, originally proposed and launched it as a week-long celebration. In 1976, the commemoration was extended from a week-long event to the entire month of February. Throughout the month, observances are held to increase public awareness of the importance of black history and the numerous contributions that African Americans have made in support of their country and local communities

During Tuesday’s Commission meeting, Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation to kick off Black History Month in Macon-Bibb County. You can read the full proclamation here.
