Alex Givans has always been determined to be his own boss one day. He is now living the dream, but it wasn’t always an easy road.

Givans was born and raised in Jamaica. He later moved to Brooklyn, to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology at New York City College of Technology (NYCCT). After graduation, he moved to Macon in 2013 to start his own home security systems company, Jamtek.

“It was extremely challenging, but at the same time I love what I do, so it doesn’t feel disheartening,” said Givins. “It’s rewarding in the sense that I’m able to make my family proud and be able to show everyone in my home of Jamaica that it can be done. If I can do it, you can do it too.”

Givans comes from a family of master electricians. Jamtek offers IT support, low voltage electrical solutions, and home security systems. They provide Telecom Installation, Repair, and Maintenance and also install and service CCTV, Burglary, Fire Alarm, and Audiovisual Systems, Network Designs and more.

For anyone looking to start their own business, Givins has some advice: “Take every step, don’t skip any. Learn the ins and outs of running a business. Learn as much as possible.”
