Eleven more acres of prime property along Eisenhower Parkway is being prepared to become part of the ongoing rejuvenation of the entire corridor as the former Macon Flea Market and neighboring strip of vacant shops is demolished. Work began in late October, and the buildings are already significantly demolished. The Urban Development Authority (UDA) acquired the property in 2024 to help have more purposeful and strategic development in the area, and to market it in a way that would complement other projects in the area.

“This is a prime location for any number of developments, with its location to the expanding Central Georgia Technical College, new nearby businesses, and, of course, the Atrium Health Amphitheater,” says Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller. “We’re taking a severely underused section of this highly trafficked corridor and making it more attractive for anything from lofts to shops to restaurants and more.”

“With the renewed interest in the area, we did not want to leave the future of this large site up to chance, and with this demolition, developers can truly see the full scope of what’s possible,” says Alex Morrison, UDA Executive Director. “We’ve been able to make major changes already, and this has the potential to a huge investment in the whole area’s future.”

“This is proof there are more than just ideas for the community. There are plans, and, more importantly, there is action,” says Jaime Arnold, Executive Director of the Eisenhower Business Improvement District. “We’re so excited for this area because so many people thought it was a lost cause. This demolition is doing more than tearing down walls…it’s helping tear down those false assumptions.”

In the past several years, Macon-Bibb County and partners have focused revitalization efforts on the Eisenhower Business Corridor to help turn around years of businesses moving out. Just at the Macon Mall, Macon-Bibb has increased foot traffic by opening Rhythm & Rally, the world’s largest indoor pickleball facility, and moved several government offices there, including the Board of Elections, Planning & Zoning, Literacy Alliance, Regional Commission, SafeBuilt, and a library annex.

The Atrium Health Amphitheater is bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the area, and a partnership with the Bibb County School District, Industrial Authority, and Urban Development Authority has opened the innovative Advanced Manufacturing Pathway near there to help prepare students for industry jobs.

“While Eisenhower won’t be the same as we all grew up with and remember, it can again be a major center of activity and life,” says Mayor Miller. “We are being purposeful about our efforts there to make sure our work supports greater growth, and control of this property gives a major opportunity to do something big there.”
