Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Macon-Bibb County came together to remember the lives lost and honor the first responders who risked and gave their lives to save others.

The Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation held its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, September 11, at Public Safety Memorial Park in Downtown Macon. Local leaders, public safety agencies, and members of the community gathered to reflect on the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the bravery and sacrifice shown by first responders that day.

“Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the people whose lives were taken that day and the first responders who ran toward danger to help others,” said Warren Selby with the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation. “It is important that we continue coming together as a community to honor their courage and sacrifice and make sure future generations understand why we will never forget.”

The ceremony included a Presentation of Colors by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Macon-Bibb County Fire Department Honor Guard. Representatives from the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office placed roses on the memorial as a symbol of Macon-Bibb’s commitment to never forget the sacrifices made by those who serve their communities.

A wreath was also placed at the memorial in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11 and in honor of the men and women who serve in public safety.

“Twenty-five years may have passed, but our responsibility to remember has not,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “We honor the thousands of lives lost, the first responders who showed extraordinary courage, and the families who have carried that loss with them for a quarter of a century. By continuing to gather and remember, we make sure their stories and sacrifices are never forgotten.”

This year’s ceremony carried added significance as the community marked 25 years since a day that changed the nation forever. Through the annual remembrance, Macon-Bibb continues to honor the lives lost, recognize the courage of first responders, and ensure the sacrifices of September 11 are never forgotten.
