Hundreds of Macon-Bibb County households are now better prepared to receive important weather alerts after a successful weather radio giveaway hosted by the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

On Wednesday, August 26, the EMA team distributed 350 free NOAA weather radios at the Macon Mall as part of its ongoing efforts to help residents prepare for severe weather and other emergencies.

“We are thrilled that so many people took advantage of this opportunity to make sure they have another way to receive potentially life-saving information,” said EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. “Severe weather can happen at any time, and having multiple ways to receive alerts can make a big difference when every second counts.”

Weather radios provide alerts directly from the National Weather Service, including warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, and other hazardous conditions. They are especially important during overnight storms or in situations where cell phone service or power may be disrupted.

The giveaway was part of EMA’s recognition of National Emergency Management Awareness Month throughout August. The team has spent the month highlighting the importance of preparedness and the work being done locally to keep Macon-Bibb County safe.

The event also comes as Macon-Bibb County continues making significant investments in its emergency warning system. Installation recently began on new and upgraded outdoor emergency sirens throughout the county as part of a nearly $3 million project aimed at strengthening emergency alert capabilities.
