Fire Department holding fire safety essay and poster contest

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department is holding its annual Fire Prevention Essay and Poster Contest and is looking for students to participate. The essay contest is for 5th, 8th, and 12th grade public, private, and home-schooled students in Macon-Bibb County. The poster contest is for students in grades K-5th in public, private, or home-school. The essay and poster must reflect the 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme: “Charging into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower”.

This year, Fire Prevention Week is recognized from October 4 through October 10 and seeks to better educate the public on the importance of using safe cook practices. All winners will be recognized in October during the Annual Fire Prevention Week Opening Ceremony.

  • 5th grade essays should consist of 125-250 words.
  • 8th grade essays should consist of 200-700 words
  • 12th grade should consist of 400-700 words.

Essays must be submitted through email at jwebb@maconbibb.us with 2026 Fire Prevention Essay Contest in the subject bar on or before 5:30 p.m. on September 11.

Posters must be 17 x 11 inches in landscape orientation. Any type of paper or poster board may be used. They should be submitted on or before 5:30 p.m. on September 11, to the Macon-Bibb County Fire Prevention Office (1111 First Street).

To avoid disqualification, each essay and poster MUST include the student’s first and last name, parent’s name and phone number, and their school’s name.

The winners for the essay contest will receive cash prizes:

  • 5th Grade First place $100, Second Place $75, Third Place $50, Honorable Mention $25
  • 8th Grade First place $150, Second Place $125, Third Place $100, Honorable Mention $25
  • 12th Grade two $500 Scholarships

The winners for the poster contest will also receive cash prizes:

  • First Place $100, Second Place $75, Third Place $50
  • Three $25 Honorable Mentions
