Macon-Bibb County, the Macon Housing Authority, Affordable Housing Fund, Sheridan Construction and other partners officially broke ground on Tuesday, March 24, marking the start of construction for Pleasant Hill Landing, a new multi-family housing development in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood.

“This is an investment in people, in neighborhood revitalization, and in the future of Pleasant Hill,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “We’re proud to partner on a project that will bring quality, affordable housing and new life to this community.”

For Macon-Bibb’s Neighborhood Programs Coordinator Jerry Battle, the project represents more than new housing, it’s part of a larger vision for strengthening neighborhoods.

“This is about building community,” said Battle. “When you invest in housing, you’re also investing in families, stability, and the long-term success of the neighborhood.”

The development, located at 151 Madison Street, will include three three-story residential buildings designed to serve families while supporting long-term revitalization in the area. It will offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom units that are income-restricted under federal guidelines, while also contributing to a more mixed-income housing environment.

“Our goal is to make really good affordable housing for people who need it. The demand for affordable housing in Macon-Bibb and throughout the state and throughout the United States is an all-time high,” said Macon Housing Authority CEO Mike Austin.

The new housing will be built on the site where the former Macon Charter Academy once stood. The long-vacant building had become a safety concern after sitting empty for nearly eight years, and its redevelopment marks a major step forward for the neighborhood.

Pleasant Hill Landing, LP is a not-for-profit affiliate of In-Fill Housing II, LLC and the Macon Housing Authority, focused on creating high-quality, affordable housing options for the community.

Funding for the project comes from a combination of a private loan, the Macon-Bibb County Affordable Housing Fund, and Macon-Bibb County, reflecting a strong partnership aimed at expanding housing opportunities and strengthening neighborhoods across the county.

Construction is expected to be completed by spring of 2027.
